Stromberg mixture bits & pieces

Post by k2bords »

Hi all - I've moved from sea level to a field elevation of ~5500' msl. I'm interested in adding the mixture control to my Stromberg. According to a document found over on bowersflybaby.com here‎ the mixture control on the Stromberg can be very effective. What is the groups experience with this? Currently on my carb there is a plate over where the mixture stuff should be (no arm or anything). What might the group suppose is under that plate? Nothing? Do we know of a source for the guts of the mixture for these Strombergs? I'd rather not take it apart to find out what's there and then be down waiting to discover the parts.

Thank You!!

Alright, after some more digging and researching I've come to realize the carb on my engine is technically illegal. According to the part # it is for a C-75 ONLY. Curious since the carb has been on the plane with an A-65 since before I was born and Don at Don's dream machines changed out the venturi/jet to run the stroker C-85 but never changed the part #. I'm working with Dan Peter at Aircraft Systems, Inc to either get my carb worked up to the right variation stromberg and part # changed or exchange for correct flavor stromberg. Either way, the carb I get back will be mixture capable! Now, legalities about hooking it up? Anything other than logbook entry? Grab an A-700 cable from Spruce like this and install? Reading around it sounds like a good idea to put an extension on the mixture control arm. Bob at Uni-Tech sells an arm for $100, worth it? Have people built their own? I've found the drawings for the arm on page 12 here‎. It looks like flat stock with a channel milled out of the bottom. Also photos here, here, and here.

There is a lot of information out there on these carbs. I have put together an entire book on them. If you like, I can copy everything and send it to you for cost. The extender is easy to build. I am based at 6875', and made sure I had a working mixture control when I re-built my carb. Surprisingly, I really don't seem to need it that much?

Brian, I appreciate the offer. I'm not sure I need all the documentation. I've heard back from Dan at Aircraft Systems and we're going to exchange my carb for the proper one, with a a mixture. Now I'm just looking to hook it up. As to the mixture control arm extension - I know that AN arm would be easy to build, I'm curious about building THE arm though that's been documented to be on these carbs. Did you build the one outlined in the drawings?

UPDATE: I've been messaging with folks over on the Cessna 120/140 board and have found a member over there (Amazonjet) who has had a bunch of these made and claims them to be exact to the drawings. He is offering them up for $15 + shipping.

The forum topic over at the 120/140 board can be found here.

EDIT - If you'd like to purchase one of these the contact info is:
