Primer operation

Post by Bluemax »

We have a new (to us!) 46 Champ with the style old primer which seems to have no seals what so ever inside. It doesn't leak but, when pumped, you can't really feel a shot of fuel in it but the engine starts OK. A forum somewhere mentioned leather seals. Is ours missing something, or are there really no seal used with this primer? Thanks.

I am also a new champ owner (n83987), and find the same thing with my primer. It does not feel like it is pulling any gas in. I have not disassembled the primer yet, but have read about the old style packing inside. I am hoping for some veteran champ owners to chime in.

Someone might correct me on this but I don't believe there are any seals in the primer as you're describing it...just a check valve and close fit. My old Champ had that type and it worked fine. I have a Cessna 150 primer on my new machine and that does have an "0" ring type seal that gets stiff after it sits for awhile. With all primers it's best to pull them back, wait and let the chamber fill before pushing and of course you can always take the line off at the intake spider to see if it's actually moving the fuel.

I posted some photos in the fuel system section some time ago, maybe something here will help you with the primers.

Bluemax, if around the perimeter of the face of the plunger it says "LUCKENHEIMER" there is a packing up inside the nut - probably 1 to 2 turns around the shaft depending on dia of the packing material. In James posting of the first picture just to the left of the chrome nut there is what looks like a copper compression gasket/wshr. The Luckenheimer primer has something similar- behind this wshr up inside the nut is 1 or 2 wraps of the packing material depending on the diameter 3/32 or 1/8 of packing. You may have to make a tool to grip onto this wshr and pull out of the inside of the nut to get behind it. This probably needs replacing and I got mine at the plumbing dept at the local Ace aircraft hardware store................Gory in MN

A couple of wraps of leather strips do the trick and I think that was original in the primer. Think of leather like shoe lace size and wrap it around the stem.

Thanks Gory and all. I will look inside the nut to see about the packing. Found 3/32" Teflon packing at ACE hardware. Will try to pull old packing and insert the new stuff. Thanks again!
