Looking at (what must be) an original picture of a Chief it appears the compass is located on top of the dash. Seems like it would hide the fuel gauge somewhat and my compass seems to pick up the metal tube that forms the round part of the dash. Is there a better location and has anyone had luck hanging it higher where the headliner wraps around the front spar carry through? I realize that's metal too but I could set the bracket down some. Also, has anyone used the vertical card compass? I have no experience with them but I've heard they are more sensitive to stray electricity, etc. than the whisky compass. Not a crisis at this point but thinking ahead and looking for opinions.

Mike,
My compass is mounted as you describe. I have a correction card, but it is too small to read. I have not noticed a problem withe interference. I can watch the gas gauge bounce around by slightly craning my neck. (I'm pretty tall, but I doubt you would have any trouble.)

Mike,

I have a clean copy of the panel drawing for Chief's and it shows the compass location as you described. My chief has the compass mounted in the second position as you described and it doesn't seem to have any special sensitivities. I'll have to admit that I don't try to use it for any precision navigation though so can't argue any special benefit for its' mounting position. It is very readable, not in the way of other gauges etc. and is fairly stable once in cruise.

Seems like hanging it from the front carry through spar would be a better deal although I admit I use my GPS for primary navigation anyway. Actually there is space in the dash area too if I was to make a hole above the left side yoke but think I'll try the upper location to see how it goes.
