Well I was away for a couple of days and thought I would check in on the auction.

It was speculated the high bidder knows where the lost logbooks are........hmmmm



We have jumped another $2000 since the last check.

Our airport manager, who has been in aviation in Iowa since the Wright brothers, knew Sheldon, the owner of this plane. He says that those books would most likely be in a safe someplace. Owner wasn't one to misplace them. I bet they turn up.

I have begged and encouraged Scott to make a concerted effort to locate the logs and he has assured me they went through everything in the house several times looking for them. I even suggested going back to the last person(s) who might have worked on it thinking the logs were never picked up after maintenance. Nothing so far.

I have gone through the house multiple times. I have contacted the people who have annual'd the plane. Even friends who tried to help keep dad's things together. I'm sorry, they may have been taken out of the plane and left in the machine shed at one time and damaged/destroyed. Or, they were thrown away by accident.

I would say 15 years ago they would have been in a safe place and dad would have known exactly where they were. Trips in and out of the hospital and nursing homes at the end caused a lot to go awry.

Well was it one of the members of the NAA? Or did it get bought for the engine and prop. Quite a rare aircraft, probably not see another one.

Well this is one of those never ending mysteries. We know who bought the runway lights that were part of the same auction as this 7JC, but as of 21 JAN 2018 the new owner has not come forward or filed for a new registration in their name.

People still ask....especially those who follow Aeronca aircraft

Probably putting a tailwheel on it as we speak. That, with a 150 Lycoming and a Citabria panel.
Shure hope somebody realizes the rarity of this little gem. I've got a 7HC that was converted should they want to swap. It's in about the same or better shape, and I'll throw in the 150 Lycoming.

How long can they leave it unregistered before it becomes a giant problem?

And any guesses as to what percentage price hit an aircraft like this takes with missing logs? We are looking at a Cub with missing logs, but total time available.

I sold a Cherokee for cheap without logs. Made the buyer sign a contract making the logs worth $5 grand if we ever found them. Two years later we did find them.

I have asked the auction company, asked the executor of the estate, tried every avenue to ascertain where it went and have nothing. Unless you were there and saw them load it up I don't know who else to turn to.
That registration can sit for a couple of years canceled before they have to file an application to keep the N number. I had one canceled for almost two years and decided I'd better file an application to protect the chain of ownership. Darn if they didn't turn around and send me back a new registration.

Logs would be 10 to 20% of the value, I would guess. Now that doesn't mean paperwork is worth 10% of a flying airplane. If you have a plane with no/incomplete paperwork expect to take a 10-20% hit on the sale price.
Sure hope they don't modify the JC. Still have the HC should they want to swap.

Everyone should know what they paid for it at auction $8000 + $1200 premium.

Transporting it to Virginia from Iowa $3000 leaves a $1800 profit.
