Champ Videos
We were goofing off yesterday and my brother had his video camera. Hope you enjoy it.

Try putting the stick in your lap and leaving it there until the mains come off. That's by far the shortest takeoff "technique" in my Champ, assuming the tailwheel isn't sinking in too far. I never lift my tail more than a couple inches on takeoff in the Champ. I have big tires and a big engine, so your mileage may vary. Once you get off, keep it in ground effect (without sinking back to the ground!) until you get 45 or so. Not as cool to watch but it does get you flying quicker. It would be fun to video several different techniques and see what works best in your airplane.

Hopefully we'll get some more in the next couple of weeks. Clay tells me he uses "Window's Movie Maker" to do the editing, but might upgrade if we start getting serious.
Dusty, I've tried that technique you've described and boy does it work! I can get off in about 130 feet when light. And thats with a cruise prop! I like the idea of videoing the different styles.
Hopefully we can get a better video of the "max takeoff." It's really impressive, letting it roll and build speed, then pulling back. It sits on the tail for about 500 feet at 60+ degrees! Not for every takeoff but fun every once and a while.
More to come!

I also take off in 3 point attitude and I also believe it gives the shortest take off roll (7DC).
I did a few "tests" the other day and lightly loaded the difference between the two take off techniques seemed to be 5 to 10 meters (15 to 30 ft). That was into a 10 kt headwind.
That doesn't seem to be a lot, but still I think the 3 point attitude take off "feels" better...

2 Champs, 2 Citabrias, I guess I am addicted !
The shortest takeoff you will do is by trimming neutral, hold a little back stick then when it tells you it is ready to fly, let it ! Fly off in the 3 point attitude. Differences between oleo and spring gear are whether it bounces or not.
Once airbourne, check forward to pick up a little speed then climbout at what you are comfortable with.
My current Citabria has an inapropriate ASI so it usually reads zero on the climbout !

Finally getting some time to play with the camera again. Took this over the weekend, while leaf-peeping. Coming into land, I simply placed the camera on the dash. What's cool, as I slipped it over the trees, the camera rattled around enough to keep the runway in view.

Peachstate
Nathan,
I had a chance to fly over to Peachstate last month in a Stearman. That particular day they were filming an episode for Wings to Adventure that airs on one of the cable channels. We had a great time. Lots of neat planes, beautiful weather, open cockpit...... I just can't explain. Wish I could make the trip more often
