Rotary magneto switch

Post by brink »

I picked up a project that had been stored for 35 years, in a sea land container, and it seemed a few parts grew legs and walked off, the project came with a Stinson 108 magneto switch, I am looking for a Champ Stock A-7 rotary magneto switch, right now I am using two toggle switches, if you know of anyone that needs a Stock 108 magneto Switch with the handle I have a nice one complete with the start button,

I have several old style magneto switches. I need to get to the hangar and see what is in the box.

Some of A-8 switches have an AD on them, so be sure it's what you want.

Brink-
Do any of these mag switches suit your application?

Refer to them as 1 to 4 from left to right.

Brink,
Take a look at AD 50-04-01 and make sure it doesn't apply.

This switch is old, and I seen that all rotary lever switches Briggs And Stratton require before flight testing. Built in USA Wisconsin, still haven’t made out the - letter or number, that follows the switch model. switch had at least 4 coats of paint, and the Off, mag1,mag2 Both were barely visible,I used paint stripper, and gently removed the multi layers of paint it’s been repainted, and I used water base white paint on the lettering this morning, used High temp black paint, none of these lever type switches were PMAed, but the Type Certificate calls out the A-7,8 or equvilant, that’s all I have found out. I will use the switch until I can find another, but right now it works, and falls under (equil to or better than) part replacement under 43-13. Don Jones I,think gave up on the Philippine replacement he was working on years ago. Over the years I’ve rebuilt several of them, anytime I can get parts I do it, mostly out of aircraft wrecking yards, even getting the small rivits that hold the lever in place, it’s a special rivit, very had to find, at one time I had 8 of them.

Christmas is a great time to sit down with an adult beverage and review AD notes, one caught my eye 76-07-12, I’ve determined that the unknown logo is a dot. Key or lever axuated Switch. And my switch I believe falls under this AD even tho it Identifys with the dot the 10 dash number does not appear, the gray area is the dot followed by the part number. It’s a operation check prior to T/O. Or at every 100 hours, TC 759 rev 58 is the newest revision I have on my Champ, it does not address the Magneto Switch. Next stop will be the engine Type Certificate,

Well The Engine Type Certificate, addressed the Magnetoes, and the rest of my engine C-75-12 is all their, so My next stop was the appliance ops Spec. That applied to only Key operated switches, keep hitting dead ends, which is good, no news is good news. I did get the switch repainted, and it looks great. One thing I did notice the handle after I stripped off the black paint had a Kringle finish, and it wasn’t Kringle paint. I guess so you could get a grip on it. Never seen that, see something new every day. Had a hell of a hard time getting the lever clean enough to paint it red, kept coming out orange peel, it’s a user I Just hope it lasts, and works for several more years, maybe Don Jones will do his magic and start building them. I recall at one time he was going to do just that.HNY
