Side plexiglas window extrusion

Post by brink »

I am hunting four Aluminum metal extrusions that are installed on a 7 AC and attach to the side Pilot plexiglas windows that slide, the 4 parts I need ,I’ve checked all the normal vendors, and no body makes these aluminum parts,. Hoping somebody has some old units that they would be willing to sell.

Originals were a bent channel affair. I found some replacement years ago at a local glass shop. Early Citabria's used the same stuff, might try ACA for parts or maybe Univair.

I located some used sliding Plexiglas still had the extrusions on them, I was lucky all four extrusions were still installed, going to take a ride this weekend and pick them up. A bunch of great guys in the Aeronca Family.

On my 7AC Champ Project the sliding Plexiglas window was 1/2 inch thick, with no extrusions attached. The sliding window extrusions were originally probably made of Steel, the replacement extrusions I bought were made of Aluminum, and the folded area was not squared off, where it fit,and slid, and bottomed out in the plexiglas. The old windows I found were riveted in the extrusions. I was able to drill out the rivits and cleaned up the extrusions, they were a univair part. .040 Drill size I guess the best way to secure the extrusions to the Plexiglas is with small machine screws and 5/16 lock washer and nut, if I can find some small acorn nuts, they would look nice, securing them with lock tight.I am afraid if I try to Rivit on the pieces, it will crack the Plexiglas. Even the rivits I used on my boot cowl were to hard to use on Plexiglas. Looked thru all the posts but I didn’t find any info on this subject. I am sure somebody has done this installation before. The project came with tracks top and bottom, one of the previous owners must have got them, none of the small holes in the tracks match up to the U channel on the aircraft. Lots of talk about the sliding windows, binding, rattling, will not slide without the use of a crow bar! And some talk about the Chief model and how the owners solved the Issues, great reading, I am so hard of hearing now, that I probably would never hear a rattling window!

I install the edging on the glass with rivets. Be sure to use A or B rivets, all the others are too hard. I install them with the set in a bottle bar, and upset the shop head with a hammer for better control.

Ya I. Hear ya, I used machine Phillips and thin fibre locks, did a profit and will do the final assembly after I cover my fuselage. Right now they slide really well, the fibre locks don’t interfere at all.
