Prop Refinishing

Post by kyleb »

Can anyone point me towards a good varnish, polyurethane, or urethane to use in refinishing a wooden prop?

Thanks,

Kyle

Sensenich recommends using "spar varnish". I've had good luck with several of the premium brands at your local hardware or paint store. There is actually a polyurethane that is labeled "spar varnish".

You might want to thin it down a bit before applying it. Have heard that it can be thick...

Don't forget to keep the prop balanced as you apply it.

I had some information on Sensenich prop refinishing on the fAA site. Might find the thread by doing a search of the digest. I had a good conversation with the factory about what they did and the colors they used. I remember it was a high density varnish that they use now and it's hard to get in small
quantities. I used Fred Meyer Spar Varnish, but it wore off in about two summers worth of propping.

This gentleman shows how it is done and the results are simply a work of art. . . don't know about the steel on bronze dissimilar issues at the end, but the results are work a good look.
