Boy, when you get down to the last few items before finishing a restoration, you realize that a "few" is about 109!
I put the trim back together (pulleys on the bottom of the stab), put the tab on and realized something is wrong: the lower cable can get to the lower horn on the tab, but the upper cable can't get to the upper tab unless it goes through the fabric of the elevator itself. This can't be right!
THe drawing is no help: does anyone have a picture of the trim tab handy?
Wings are on, tail is rigged, ailerons are on, interior is at the upholstery shop, panel is done, fuel system, controls, gear, and engine all finished.
To go are the wing fairings, Cleveland conversion (parts in the mail), and cowlings (right now they aren't quite aligned and the exhaust interferes with the bottom cowl, and the lettering.

I assembled my Champ without the benefit of having *disassembled* it. I thought the same thing about the trim cable - it can't go through the fabric. Can it? Yes, it can. Yes, it must. Yes, it does. Weird, but true. This is the case with the Champ; the Sedan may be a different animal. I added a piece of vinyl over the slit to reinforce the fabric. I'd have simply glued on an extra couple of layers, had I known in advance. Perhaps a double layer of heavy-duty fabric would have been nice. Mine was already painted, though.
You're 95% finished, with only 90% left to do... There really is a light at the tunnel's end.

To locate the holes in the lower cowling I made a template out of scrape aluminum. First, cut a scrap piece of aluminum large enough to attach to the lower two mounting holes on the firewall and the center hole on the nose bowl. This will provide alignment. Next, eyeball the location of the exhaust holes and cut two oversize holes in the scrape aluminum. Now, cut two "patches" large enough to cover the oversize exhaust holes. Cut holes in the patches to match the clearance you want around the exhaust pipe. Attach the scrape aluminum to the firewall and the nosebowl. The exhaust pipe should be sticking through the oversized holes. Now place the patches over the oversized holes and the exhaust pipes. Cleco into place. Now you have a pretty good template for locating the exhaust holes on the final product. I got mine right on only the third try!!!!
To locate the hole for the trim cable, I used a light and the lower cable to cast a shadow on the elevator. This will locate the longitudinal axis. Then I eye balled from the end of the elevator the location of the holes along the previously located longitudianl axis. Made a very small hole and ran a piece of wire from the pulley to the upper tab. Pull the wire tight to simulate the cable. Now enlarge the hole in the direction the wire touches the fabric. And with a little luck.......
Well that is the way I did it. I am sure there are other approaches, maybe easier.
