aileron rod

Recently I was looking at several aileron bell cranks for the best two rods and discovered one of the rods was actually a tube threaded on each end. It occured to me that this may be an original part since replaced with a rod. I have two good rods which I will use. Just wondering if the threaded tube is this an original. Anybody know?

Dennis, I have disassembled 7-8 sets of Champ wings. All I have seen are solid rods. Seems to me this rod is pretty small to begin with. Tube doesn't sound very strong. David Johnson

Dennis the tube is used on the Tandem series (L3).

Thanks Paul and David, By the way, the "tube" part was missing. Only the threaded ends of the tube were still in the rod ends. Apparently it had broken on both ends. I too could not imagine anyone replacing a rod with a tube.

Theoretically, a tube is stronger and lighter than a rod due to the stress paths along and around it.

Most of the control runs on RV's are tubes, even the small ones out to the flying surfaces.
