Not much action!

Post by MikeB »

Not much going on at the Aeronca site today. Everyone else must be flying their Champs and Chiefs  . Went to the airport this morning and sat around with the rest of the loafers until noon waiting for the ceiling to go up. It didn't, that is, until I got back home and started breaking up concrete for my wife's next project (they all include work for me........not flying :( ).

Tomorrow afternoon looks better :D . Withdrawl symptoms are bad .

Nathan: Yah, so what's your point. Myself I've been down for two days changing a seal in one of my mags. The only good thing is the weather has been crappy in those two days. Hopefully back in the air tomorrow 8)

Ah Ron, what's a little oil in a mag. :P Well, if it's any consilation, it was really hot and I had to take the door off to keep cool.

And speaking of Mags, mine were advanced about 3 degrees each. Made them fire at 32 and 31 instead of 30 and 28 BTC. What are the chances that was adding to my overheating problems?

Nathan: Could run a tad cooler at the lower settings, but the biggest thing to watch out for at the higher settings is detonation if you use car gas, especially with your higher compression. I'm guessing here but you would have to be in the 35 +degree range for detonation to occur with avgas. Slightly more power with more advance. Changed my 65 from 30/30 to 28/28 and saw around 25 rpm less at full throttle. Since the mags are going back on tomorrow, you can bet your a$$ it will be back to 30/30 for sure. An engine expert told me that dropping to 28/28 would make run a little cooler without effecting power. Definition of an expert= has been/drip under pressure. He was wrong one the one part.
How are your mags wired? Left mag fires two bottom and two top and right mag the same way or are they wired to fire left mag bottoms and right mag tops? This has a bearing on settings. If each mag is set to fire two tops and two bottoms, the timing should be the same for both mags. If the left fires the bottoms only the normal way is to set them at different degrees. Since nobody has successfully explained this rational to me, I also set both mags to the same advance an it works great. Some crap about swirl patterns in the chamber requiring more advance on the bottoms to even things out. Ya right, whatever. Follow that thinking to the two tops and two bottoms per mag and figure out why two settings are used. Now apply common sense and set them accordingly.
Man, that engine will be gutless when you back the timing off

They're wired, Left=bottom plugs, Right=top plugs. The left is set at 28 and right is 30.

I didn't notice any power reduction, but the sound did seem a little different, but that could be my mind playing tricks on me. Kind of like when flying over water, at night, in IMC, in a single engine. But it did seem to start a little easier, which does make sence to me.

I've heard the "Swirl Theory" and it seems like a load of crap too me also!

It will take about 25 hours and anouther oil change to see if things are really changing.

Then why the different settings?

edit, that quote should have said "heard." I can't spel. :D

Why the different settings; unlike you lucky Canadians, I have to obay the FAA. :x Maybe, when I need that little extra kick, I'll check the timing again.

Nathan: Should it not be Left 30 and Right 28, if you buy into that swirl thingy theory?
