I was looking around, and I think that the battery I was wondering about was the odyssey battery, it weighs about 15 pounds and is used in supercubs with the big engines, It should work fine for a C-90.

Starter

Post by Tim Juhl »

Seeing as I started this thread in 2004, I thought I'd chime in and let you know that I got my starter / battery installation inspected and approved by an inspector from the Detroit FSDO this past fall. I went with the Skytec / push button starter and installed a Concorde RG Battery in a box behind the rear seat at the same place they put them in the 7EC. I use an RV type trickle charger to give it a boost now and then but the battery can go a long time between recharges.

I am very happy with the installation and don't miss having to hand prop at all! I also appreciate the provision of auxiliary power which I use to run my Garmin 296 GPS and hand held radio. I am still considered a "non-electrical" aircraft for the purposes of transiting a mode C veil, etc.

What Tim did is another issue that I have seen several people address.

They usually put a cigarette lighter outlet or other 12v power access point during the installation. This way we can have a better source of power for our radio, GPS and lights if needed during the flight, but the plane remains a "non-electric" airplane legally.

Tim.

You may want to consider using an Odyssey drycell battery which weighs 15 lbs. Aircraft lists the battery as part #11-01945 and is certified for the Super Cub. This way, you could put together a total loss starter system for about 30 lbs. Since an electric starting system is preferable in the eyes of the FAA, I would think approval would be simpler.

Well, we have the starter(sky-tec) and battery in hand, what did most people do for a battery box? We were thinking about keeping it on the firewall, like the later model planes.

Thanks for the help!!

Battery box

Post by Tim Juhl »

Lance,
Since the Odyssey battery is sealed, all you need is a hold down, not a vented and drained box like you'd use with the old conventional batteries. If you want to attach it to the firewall all you need to do is rivet a piece of aluminum "L" extrusion to the firewall for it to sit on, a smaller one above it to hold it down, and nutplates to either side to hold an aluminum "U" bracket.

In my case I installed an aircraft RG battery in a aircraft battery box I got from a salvage yard. I put it behind the back seat where it would go in a 7EC. Having a certified battery in a approved box in a approved location may have made it easier for the FAA to approve my installation although it is a little heavier.

Does anybody have a copy of their 337 that they would like to share? We are doing the sky-tec starter and lightweight battery in a 7bcm converted to a ccm, and our A&P said any paperwork would be helpful.

Thanks, Lance

Sky-Tec Starter paper work

Post by Mnflyer »

Hi Lance. go to these site for paperwork information. If you have Sky-Tec p/n C12STC2 this starter is FAA PMA approved part and is a simple install and sign off by the A&P.

If you go the STC route then the A&P just fills out a 337 and has an IA approve it and file it.
Sky-tec has PMA approval : PMA NO: PQ0852SW
