Fuel Tank Filler Neck Grommet Needed

Post by DELCOM »

Hi All: I was looking for the grommet that goes on the filler neck of the 13 gallon nose tank of my 7AC. The parts book does not show it so I assume that it was added at a later date. It has a 2 1/4" ID and is approx. 1" tall. It supports the cowl sheet metal as it passes over the filler neck location. It seems to be a good idea, but is it needed? It would seem that It would give good support to the sheet metal at the hole for the filler neck to pass thru. Any advice on this ?
Thanks........ Del

Believe that the same grommet from a John Deere tractor fits. Forgotten which one it is but have heard this. Am overseas now and cannot check but will look when I get a chance.

Also know of people that have found a rubber closet flang at one of the hardware chains that fit the bill, with some trimming.

Fuel Tank Grommet

Post by OLE »

Del,

I know this is a bit late, but perhaps you still need a grommet. I tried several kinds, including the toilet one, but this one holds up to gas. Go to your friendly John Deer dealer and ask for :

Fuel Tank Grommet - Part # R82873 [Bin-J286] It'll be about $12.oo.

PS If you already have the boot cowling on, you will have to grind off the bottom flang of the grommet to get it on. It's needed for two reasons. 1. You don't want metal to metal. 2. When you spill a little fuel, it won't run down inside.

I'm going to add one to my Champ also. I run a mix of auto fuel and AVgas. If you spill one drop it stinks to high heaven inside the plane. I think the cap vent even lets a small amount of fumes inside when your flying. Maybe this will help some

Thanks

Well I have been on vacation for a couple of weeks but went in today to pick up the fuel tank grommet I ordered from John Deere. Wow...It is very nice and fits great. It is embossed with the word FUEL 3 times around its circumference. I highly reccommend it.
