I'm wondering if the oleo didn't drop out of the housing. I'm assuming if they call it a compression strut and it's a 7ECA it still has oleos. One of my old gears (before they were rebuilt) had the plastic type material on the top with 'snatch' cables. I know there was a service letter or AD on the old style oleo materials. I still have the snatch cables and am considering putting them back on even with the new parts. Ugly, but they work!
On the other hand, if the oleo dropped out, it would more likely affect landing
