There is an excellent (at least in my opinion) article on AVWeb this week by Mike Busch. It discusses what an IA does, but also doesn't necessarily do during an annual. Makes some good points about the difference between an inspection vs. maintance.

Good article and good information! The main reason why I got my A&P license over 25 years ago was because of a "difficult" annual. The other owner and I pulled a stiff leg Cardinal apart for the IA and presented it to him for the annual. We were going to do the dirty work and he just "inspected"...
After he found no major squawks and we put everything back together again we were presented with a bill for $1200, on a fixed gear, constant speed prop (which was not overhauled) airplane with no major issues. Remember that these are 1978 dollars, not todays currency.
After that I started looking into getting my A&P because there had to be some money there somewhere and I loved airplanes. I found out that there is money in aviation and it was mine, flowing out somewhere else! Worked "turning wrenches" for many years before jumping in the cockpit to fly for a living. Still it is very worthwhile to have this rating and to be able to do the majority of your own maintenance.
