Looking for a Champ....

Post by CptKelly »

I'm in the market for a really nice Champ. Must be at least 85 hp, and also must qualify for a LSA. If anyone has one that fits, let me know.

Just thinking here, but what does the useful load fall into on these 85 horse Champs with electrical, mufflers, extra fuel tanks, etc? Seems with the 1320# Light Sport it can't leave a lot for extra weight.

Nathan: what's the status on your Champ?

I've seen some that are 950 empty, while others are a little more respectable at 850. It certainly does cut down the legal useful load.

I'm ashamed to say the rebuild is a bit stagnant. Pulled the motor and installed it on my dad’s cub so it wouldn't sit around rusting, and have tracked down several parts, but that’s about it. Luckily the Georgia Mountain Boy's are on my hide about once a week to 'get with it.' Still shooting for Middletown '08.

If you need to keep your engine from rusting, we can install it on my Champ  , too (in case Pop doesn't get enough hours). Never flew a Champ with a 85 so that would be a good test.

Are the plans to replace spars, etc. Don't remember particulars.

All 4 spars will be replaced, and will install wing tanks (the little 5.5gal ones) at the same time. Haven't decided yet, but may swap over to a set of Clevelands.

I'll keep you offer in mind Mike.
