U shaped clamp

Post by pablo »

After great flying and refueling, trying to push the Champ back in the hangar, noticed that the whole tail wheel asemble remained at 45 degrees from the fuselage. The U shaped clamp that keeps the tail wheel springs aligned with the fuselage is broken! My tool box contains a phillips screwdriver and an air pressure gage... I do not even know what is the name of the broken part ( and apparently missing bolt), much less where to find a replacement.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

Pablo,
Checked the parts manual and no part# and what they show is not what I
have. Yours is a "U" shape with two ears with one 5/16 hole in each ear, right?? If so it easy to make but not sure if you will need the tire gauge.

If you have the above get me your address and I should be able to send a used one out to you.

The parts book shows a "U" with no flat tabs, they look to have steel tube on the side of the "U" this is where the AN4 bolt goes.

Do you still have the ears that are welded to the tail post frame??

Another chose is send it to me for pattern and I will make one for you.

Mike:

Thank you very much for your valuable and quick reply.

I will very much appreciate you sending me the used one that you have.
Include the cost and s&h, so I can reimburse you.
Have a Merry Christmas

Pablo,

I might suggest that you email your information to Mike (click on the email button on his post) and take it off of your post. No need to put more personal info on the internet than needed.

checking thoes two bolts is part of my pre flight. do not over tighten the bolts as they will bend. have checked after a rough "landing" and found them to be broken or stretched. always shake the tail and look for movment

Kevin,

You most have the setup that is shown in the parts book, "U" shape
with tubing welded to the side requiring long bolts about 2 in long?

My setup on my champ is just a 1 1/4 wide "U" with the ends bent
horizontal and fit up against the frame bracket so my blot is short and
clamps both surfaces as one. Must have been made by someone over the
years.

Still at work going to airport in a few hrs I hope.
