Sliding left window

Post by jlwright »

Someone in the past removed the sliding side window and replaced it with a solid one piece window. How much trouble is it going to be to put the slider back? The window at the bottom looks like it was glued under the fabric. Is it possible to put the channels back without recovering the fuselage? Also, when the window frames and plexiglass are new do they leak air very bad? That was the excuse I was given for making it one piece. I sure would like to have the option of opening the side window in flight. I'm assuming it's OK to do that.

side windows

just my two cents worth-- I like leaky windows in a low and slow airplane. I like the air exchange. I know two people who almost sucumbed to exhaust leaks. In such warm weather I can't imagine not being able to slide the window open and smell the roses. The doors are a pretty simple affair. Go take a look at another aeronca to see how the window is put together. The only time I do not like the leaks is when it is -10 F. or colder. That cold of wind, kind of makes parts freeze off. (on my body) haha

Jim, go have a look at Lotts or come down and look at mine. And I have an extra piece of channel. The whole setup is pretty rinky-dink but it works, the kiss principle at its best.

It should be pretty darn easy to switch back. The upper and lower track should be availible from WagAero. If you need, I'll snap a bunch of pictures of mine.

And like Big Chief said, I can't imagine flying without my arm stuck out the window!

Interesting! I have never seen one with windows that did not open up, so yes I would change it back.

That sliding window also acts as an emergency exit. The idea being, you push hard enough and the glass will bow and pop out of the channel.

Another reason I'd change it.

The parts are less than $200.00 including the windows. I went to a friends today and checked out his Champ so now I have a good idea what's involved. Thanks for the input everyone.
