I know most of you veteren restorers know this but I just received a CD from the FAA on my N number and it's history. Well worth the money to find out the history on your ship and learn things that aren't in the logs. My ship was in the state of Missouri all of it's life, right up till I brought it to Indiana.

What sort of stuff did you find out? Is there a link on the FAA website to request info on your N number?

FAA.gov. search for aircraft records. I found all transfers of ownership, 337's and registrations. It's interesting to see that in the mid fifties a Champ in good condition sold for about a hundred dollars more than a rusty set of tailfeathers go for at a swap meet these days.

Here's what I noticed on my CD; on the bill of sale(s) they always marked it as $1. Any idea why? I figure it had something to do with cheating taxes.

Yup, cheating taxes is not new. I have never made an airplane transaction that told the price. I hear that has changed. I have not bought or sold an airplane since '92. Used to be $1.00 OVC (other valuable concerns) My dad paid $1,100 in 1961 for my Champ. It had new grade A and a top on the A65. That was considered top dollar back then as barnyard J 3's and average Champ's and Chief's were selling for $900.

What part of Missouri? I grew up in Springfield and flew all around that area.

Joe,I grew up in south Kansas City,MO. My dad's airport was in Stillwell,KS . I lived in Grandview,MO right on approach to Richards-Gebaur airbase for a long time. I started my flying career at Fairfax airport in '81 when I got out of the Navy. I ended up here in the Louisville area when I went to work for the UPS contractors. All of my kinfolk is from the ozarks. Osage Beach and Eldon.
