Slick Mags.

On the 0200 engine I've been inspecting for possible purchase, it has Slick Mags Model 447 which I'm not familiar with. They are duel impulse mags and I see there is a AD on them for possible loose rivets on the impulse. I'm guessing the impulses can also be changed to a newer type. Kind of went through that on my Cherokee when I had it. Couple of questions for you AP/AI's: is it worth it to redo these mags or are they the 'throwaway type'? Are these models able to be traded in for core on a newer Slick kit? If everything else works out I'm not going to be into this engine that much so I can afford to spend some money on it. Last log book entry was 2/1970 and the aircraft was wind damaged in a storm after that so it's been sitting awhile. What I can see of the inside (cam, lifters, crank, gears, etc. ) by pulling the vacuum pump mounting plate, oil pan, mags, etc) looks clean but I haven't pulled any cylinders yet. Has about 700 SOH and 1800 TT.

Info on the mags appreciated.

Mike,
The 447 mags were the early Slick mags. I don't think they changed much when they bought-out Case magneto. You can do some work on them but you need donor mags for parts. The early Slick throwaway mags would run 3 times longer than the current mags. If they work, comply with the AD's and install.
I don't think Slick will even take them in as core on the current mags.

That's what I needed to know. I'm pretty sure these were the original mags that came with the engine in 1966. According to my AI (just talked to him tonight) and he thought the 0200's in Cessna's came new with Slick mags. Can't see in the logs where they were ever changed and the logs are actually complete and look accurate for a change
