Will a Hanlon-Wilson exhaust system off of a A-65 fit on a C-85?

Yes and will work very well.

Would $500 be a reasonable amount to pay for a decent set of Hanlon Wilson muffs? What does a new set cost?

If you could get them for $500 that would be a steal. New I believe is around $1500-2000.

These replace the straights stacks? Is the cockpit that much more quiet? With headphones on, I'm not sure what the advantages are.

Do these require a 337 or just a logbook entry?

Yes the cockpit is quieter (I have them on my Chief, believe we talked about this before) and you have a lot more heat in the cockpit as well as having more carb heat, both of which are a good thing.

We recently purchased a new set of Hanlon Wilson Mufflers from
Dawley, in Burlington, WI.
Our old Hanlons had seen their better days. With our swap, our new
Hanlons cost $1600 .

For years we messed around with the straight pipes, and found that they
usually ended up cracking or breaking after about 100 hours.
Not to speak of the lack of heat.

When we put our first Hanlon Wilson's on, we installed a Decathalon
heat valve on the firewall. Looks alot like the Cessna's.
Cost was around $100. Made all the difference in the world.
You are now no longer directing heat through a 1 to 1 1/2 hole that overheats your big toe.

We like to fly on skis, and I must say, that the Hanlon Wilson's allow the
pilot to remain warm and comfortable. A definite big time upgrade.
I know that you would be happy with them, once you have them.

Assume that you saw that the ones on Ebay went for $1300 or so? Thats a reasonable ballpark price for them. They do not come up that often and worth keeping an eye out for them when they do.

I bid on them up to around $500 or so but really don't need them at this point so I let them go. They were probably a good buy at the $1300 price. The location is only a hours drive or so north of me so I could have inspected and picked them up.

anyone know what the weight difference is? Hanlon-wilson vs Straight Y pipe. "weight is the enemy" Jack

I'm thinking maybe 10# for the system or about a 7# increase. I have Cessna 150 mufflers on Champ. I like the sound of the straight pipes but I also like to be warm. I flew this morning and it was around 35 degrees. Nice and toasty in the plane, though.

The type certificate data sheet is your friend here!

It shows that the HW system weighs 13 pounds complete, and you remove 4 pounds when taking the old "Y" exhaust system off.

If my terrible math is correct, you have 9 pounds more weight on the aircraft with the HW exhaust system. To each his own but for me its well worth it IMHO to have excellent heat, carb heat and not so much noise while flying.

I have been led to believe that the "Y" system is not legal with an 85 hp Continental. I haven't researched it because I have already decided I was going to install the HW system on my Champ.

A new one from WagAero prices out to around $2500. The one on eBay went for $1360 including shipping. That was a good deal and I am glad I bought it.

The type certificate data sheet for the 11BC and 11CC with the C-85 engine will tell you if its legal or not. If its on the TCDS then its legal.

Glad someone we know got the exhaust!
