Possible scammer on the list!

Post by joea »

Was just alerted by one of our members that there may be a scammer on the list.

He was looking for a part, a ELT and was contacted by someone saying that they were overseas. They wanted payment by Western Union, a known method of payment for scammers.

As well not sure that they even used American style of ELT, so until I hear more or someone that knows this person feel that we need to be careful and keep our eyes open. If it is a valid seller then sorry but right now there are far too many scammers (usually Nigerian) around the world trying to get our money.

As a former victim of scamming I warn all buyers to NEVER PAY ANYONE by Western Union. This method has scam written all over it and one burned you become scorned forever. So Please all viewers never accept payment or offers via Western Union. Postal Money orders are ok but also be cautious. When in doubt just walk away....

So I should never do business with Aircraft Spruce or Univair or Joe A or indeed 99.9% of the people on here..?

Take sensible precautions to avoid being scammed, for sure; but the statement quoted is somewhat silly, to say the least.

I stand by my statement about overseas purchases. For one US law does not provide protection under fraud/deception practices that a purchase overseas could (and in my case has occured).

Sorry for offending you over there in England (or the UK) but Americans have the right to protected our self interests and E.U. law with not provide that protection at all.

Rich,

We can work out a deal where we trade parts for Twiglets and Lemon Curd! :)

Got addicted to those two items from the British NAAFI when I was based in Berlin!

The Office of Economic Affairs at the in country US Embassy will assist with working out problems you may have with local people, provided its not a scam to begin with and the value of the transaction exceeds a certain amount. I have used their sevices before to force the shipment of merchandize. My problem was not with scammers but with people slower than smoke rising off crap. In country American Ebassy personnel got them off high center.

I have had a guy from a Auto Shop (so he claims) in the U.K. try to sell me a number of parts that I was looking for and had advertised here on Barnstormers. Each time he wanted my address in advance as well as payment in advance sent to him. Every time I asked for a picture of the parts that he supposedly had and never got any and when I asked how big the box was and what the freight costs would be, I was told a small box with about 6 pounds sterling frieght costs, for a set of EDO 1400 Floats. Another time it was for a Cleveland DHB Wheel, that was boggas as well as EDO Rear Fuselage Float fitttings. When selling a few items, what appeared to be the same person / business, asked what address he could have his company sent to to pick up the part and where he could wire the money. When I told him he could pay have the pick up people pay COD and I gave him a Local Parking lot as a pick up address (I could have actually done the transaction in the lot of not fake), I never heard back.

Rob,

Thats the guy or one like it. Selling parts for pennies on the $$ and shipping is way too cheap.

I posted a wanted parts for wheels and hydraulic Brake parts off a Piper Pacer, fellow contacted me Claimed he was in Las Vegas, his dad passed away, and he was cleaning out his hanger at a local small airport.I asked what airport he was at. His answer was Carson Field. That’s not in Las Vegas, wanted a Western Money Gram and he would ship the box to me Freight Collect. I flew with a guy at Emery that lived in Las Vegas, and Iwould make arrangements for him to get the parts, he hung up, I tried to call him back, but the number did not receive calls. I did find the parts in Oregon.
