Midnight Visitor

OK! I know this has nothing to do with Aeroncas or maybe it does because I'd hate to run into this guy or gal (especially with cubs) when I'm walking from the shop to the house in the dark. I heard this rattling and banging last night and there was a huge black bear ripping off the cover I'd chained on my bird seed container. I know for some folks on this site bears aren't unusual but they've only moved into our area in the past five years. Anyway, the chained cover didn't bother him at all. He just ripped it off  .

Looks like 30.06 or 12 ga slug time... A wild critter as big as yours can be very dangerous . If the authorities can't or won't deal with it, I would.

Around these parts, we put the little ones like that on a leash and walk 'em around the neighborhood...

I'd guess He'd (or she....I didn't look  ) would go about 400+ pounds. Our cat was about to tackle it before we grabbed him...goodby cat. I think this guy crossed the road just in front of my Honda cycle about a year ago. Wouldn't that have made a nice mess.

MikeB,
I guess he got an easy meal and knowing bears, chances are he'll be back for seconds! I have them around my place and the darn buggers can smell food from a LONG ways off. I was putting bear bait out, probably 1/2 mile from my house several months ago, and when I came back one of the buggers had ripped to sheds a 5 gallon jug of cooking grease that was setting right next to my hanger door. This was around 10 AM. He kept coming back daily for nearly a month. I got lots of pictures of it on my game camera.

He had been here before that's why I chained the lid down. Didn't bother him at all....just ripped the cover off. We have a grill in our screen porch on the back of the house and I'm surprised he hasn't broke in there yet just because of the smell. We actually live on a busy highway but the back of the house faces a huge swamp. My niece hit one with her car and totalled out both the car and the bear.

We've got 'em around our summer place up in the Chippewa NF. I regularly find garbage and or garbage cans strewn around the yard or even hauled across the road. We had one that decided the oranges on the oriole feeder looked like a treat and apparently climbed the steel pole holding the feeder and bent it to the ground. Every few years some tourist down at the local resort will leave food out on their porch overnight and the bears will go in one screen window and out another. Haven't had to shoot one yet, but I do carry a gun most of the time.
