Mogas

Post by Nathan K. Hammond »

This may be a silly question but; is Mogas and car/pump/auto gas the same thing?

I've seen Mogas at some of the smaller airports, but I'm not sure if it's a mix of auto and av, or straight auto gas.

Nathan,

Good question. I have always assumed that mogas was the same as the gas you buy at the local service station. I don't know why it is referred to as mogas.

its the higher octane gas you get at the gas station. without ethynol. it's the premium at the stations around here. means motor gasoline or mobility gasoline. it is an acronym that was used by the army.

Feel that "mogas" is the same thing that you see at several small airports, BUT its without ethanol to make it legal for use in STC'ed airplanes.

It's standard no-ethanol car gas. Octane depends on vendor and location. It's 87 here at VTI, which is 'Regular' pump gas in Iowa. It comes from the local bulk dealer, same guy who delivers to the farmers. We don't even get a price break when we order it....we get charged town pump price plus $.25/gal delivery charge. We're at $4.25 and not making anything.
