Is there anyone going to the fly-in at the WAAAM Museum in Hood River, Oregon next weekend?
If you've never been there, you're missing out. They have over a 100 planes. All with drip pans (See the LC picture). Many of them are kept in flying status. They have more 3 cylinder powered planes than I have ever seen in one place. When did you last see a J-3P Cub with a 3 cylinder motor? The museum is in a series of hangars. The planes are where you can see them. If you need to get closer, just ask someone. The lighting is bright, for a hangar. None of this mood lighting trash where you have to wait to look at your flash pictures to see what the plane really looks like. (anyone been to see the first C-2 at the Smithsonian?)
They also have a great collection of AERONCAs. There is a very nice pair of C-3s (one on floats). And a Low Wing LC (the only one currently flying). A 1938 KCA and a couple of L-3s. Awaiting restoration is a K. The head of their restoration shop, Tom, has a Champ.
They are also gathering a impressive number of cars. I got a ride in a Stanley Steamer last year.
There are always some great rare planes that come out of the hangar, just for this fly-in.
I'm heading there today. This is a fun place to give a few hours. They actually apreciate your help, even if you just give an hour or two. On Friday and Saturday, I'm probably working the flightline. I'll be the one with the AERONCA ball cap on. I hope to meet some people and put some faces to names. If your plane is down, go ahead and drive. It's about 45 minutes east of Portland. I hate to say it, but I'm driving. The Champ needs it's inspection and I'm transporting some parts. And the C-2 is still not legal.
