Depends if you have shielded ignition or not. For shielded you can use either the REM 40E or 37BY (shorter) plugs. I forget what the unshielded number is as I haven't used them for several years.

Looks like .016-.021. Usually I replace them when the center electrode starts to look like a football instead of round. Burning unleaded car gas they seem to last forever (kind of like the new cars). Even when using a mixture of auto fuel and 100LL they'll last a long time. The big problem I've seen when using 100LL exclusively is a buildup of lead in the electrode cavity and will occasionally bridge the gap and short out the plug. Keeping the idle speed up is supposed to help some. For whatever reason, my A65 and 0200 don't have near the leading problems the 0-320 in my Cherokee had.

Hope this helps!

Hi Danny,

I use the 37s. I asked Bill Pancake what to use when I replaced mine and the wiring recently and that is what he suggested. They are working great.

M41E are the unshielded plugs (only Champion makes them). They're pricey but for most people one new set will last a lifetime.

I have the Fine Wire (Precious Metal Tip) Spark Plugs that I put in my C-182 some years bacj, but they are now about $80.00 each from a discount supplier, so I just went with Champion, which are still a lot more expensive these days then the off Brand Plugs. I think I paid about $24.00 Each for my 37Bs from Aircraft Spruce.

Daniel,
You can check the TCDS for suitable sparkplugs. Most used is the REM40E and some use the REM37BY because their shorter and will clear the top cowl. If you're on a budget you can go with the C62S, about $8.00 from Fresno. These plugs have a 1" wrenching hex, just so you know, but are shorter than the standard plugs. They have a single electrode like a car plug. Sometimes you can find them online a little cheaper. All of these plugs are shielded type. I still run C26 non-shielded in some of my planes, but most people are smarter than me and put in radio shielding.

Danny, When I switch over from 40s to 37s in my Champ, the front upper plug harnesses did not have to be bend so severly. As the other gentleman said, the shorter external portion of the plug helps that. If I remember correctly, don't you have the little protrusions on the top of your cowl in the front area, that you wanted to remove?

Might be your rebuilt carb. I got Red Line with the 40s and my prop and the same Red Line with the same prop and the 37s.

Danny,

If I read the information on how the plugs are catolgued I think the 37s might not be quite as hot as the 40s. But, as I said, I saw no difference in engine performance.
