Weight & balance

Post by Robert »

Hi, Every one, I wonder if some one can help me out. I have a 7DC that needs an annual, I have a new AME and he is not happy with the weight and balance. The aircraft is on floats now and it's out of annual and is on a lake that doesn't lend it self to weighing anything. But that's not the problem the problem is he doesn't like the weight and balance of it on wheel.
old weight and balance, empty
393 lb left wheel
406 lb right wheel ( I think the right float door was open, hence the difference in left and right)
59 lb tail wheel
858 lbs total

` EW 858 lb 13.5" 11583
fnt tank 78 lb -15" -1170
wng tanks 120 lb 19" 2280
pilot 194 lb 11.5" 2231
pas 0 lb 46"
bag 50 lb 68" 3400
1300 lb 14.1" 18324
Is the C of G supposed to be within !6" - 20" for 1300lbs ?
are these weights unusual?
I think the tail weight looks light.
The plane flys beautifully.
Has anyone got a weight and balance sheet they can show me from a similar aircraft?

Robert,

A couple of questions. Are the floats amphibious? With straight floats you should probably have two weight and balance sheets. One for the aircraft on wheels and one for the aircraft on straight floats. The tail weight seems reasonable for straight floats and light for an aircraft on wheels.

The next question is why is this AME concerned about the weight and balance if the paperwork is with your logbooks? If everything has been fine and there have been no additions or deletions of equipment, everything is listed on your equipment list, then your present W&B should be good to go and if this chap has a problem perhaps a new AME will save you the expense and delay of weighing the aircraft.?

Just my thoughts,
Richard

Bob,
The weights look pretty close to me. Generally the planes are nose heavy, it's hard to get the added equipment back by the planes design. It's required for you to have the W/B, not for him to weigh the plane to satisfy his mind.
Have him stop by with his scales when you put it on wheels. He can help you put the wheels on and get the "warm fuzzy" he's looking for.

Richard,
They are straight floats and no doubt I would need a W&B for the float plane but we should be able to make a W&B from the known weights of the floats - the wheels etc. but that apparently is not the problem, he can't make the W&B on wheel work for him, ie: the centre of gravity envelope.
My previous AME passed away and there aren't a lot of them around, so I think I'm in for the long hall, I was hoping to find some other examples
to show him. However I know of no other 7 dc or 7bcms around here so I thought I'd give you guys a whirl.
