Landing gear safety cable?

I am in the final stages of completing some work on my Chief and have a question that I hope someone can help with.

A gentleman told me that the landing gear are supposed to have a safety cable to prevent the gear from coming all the way out of the oleo tube in case it fails. Is anyone familiar with this?

Yes, they had a safety cable on the 7 & 11 series do to the fact that poor servicing of the oleo with the fiber piston and top retainers could break letting the oleo come out of the case.

If you have complied with the AD on the fiber piston and replaced it with an al. one you could remove the safety cable but many leave it on for added safety.

Like Mike posted, if the fiber piston has been replaced as per the AD then you can remove the cable but you know its just cheap insurance should something fail in that area.

Most A&P's have a cable swedge tool and can make one. Its not hard to do so you might call around and see if any of the mechanics at your airport have one.

Take them the materials needed and a six pack of an adult beverage and bet they would do it for you.

Joe I'll bet some even have the thimbles, sweges and the hand weaving tool to hold them while the trhree crunches are being made.
