Stolen gas cap!!

Post by WWhunter »

Okay, went to go for a ride in the Champ and someone stole the gas cap and of course fuel. Where the heck can I get a replacement cap ASAP?
Thanks,
Keith

The National Aircraft Parts Store (aka NAPA) I am told has them. Believe that you want a vented cap but will let others chime in who know more about this.

PS hope you find out who stole your fuel. Have heard that a shotgun works well to make sure that they do not do something like this again.

Keith,
I hope it wasn't the embossed 13 gal cap.

Nope, wasn't an embosed cap. I went to town and the parts store had one that sorta fit. I picked up a couple different ones but neither is the best. Anyone have a part number of a NAPA/Slant/ or whatever cap that'll fit?

The bad part of all this was I had a nearly full tank and hadn't flown in over a week due to constant rain....we got 7-8 inches from what I have been told. My plane is on floats and sitting on the lake so had lots of water in the tank. I had to drain what was left in it.....2-3 gallons....and it was half water. Took a stiff wire and some rags and soaked up every bit of fuel/water I could. Refueled and went for a flight. No problems.

Mac,
Thanks, I figured they would have one, but I need something NOW. I need to fly it to get the floats taken off this Saturday so was hoping to find a replacement locally instead of having to wait a week or more to get it in the mail. Bad enough having to drive 30 miles to town just to get one. Yeah, I live in the boonies....just how I like it. :)
Winter is coming fast. Heck it snowed last week but it did melt.

Be carefull. hey are vented caps. The new style has deeper sides than the old. The vents are the bottom of the lip. Sometimes, the edge of the caps presses against the rubber tank grommet, sealing the vent holes.

I posted this issue on the fAA email list and the two replies all said to get a vented cap for the tank.

For that matter, any chance to borrow one from another airplane then order the right one from ACA or WAG? Mike Spence from Canada just got a couple from ACA and was happy with them.

Kieth, you still need a cap? I'll pull mine off and UPS it too you if it will help. It's a a non-vented model off a standard nose tank.

From another poster on the fAA email list:

If you get an vented auto cap, make sure it does not have the vapor control technology (a plastic valve and spring) in the cap. If it does take the cap apart and remove the stuff. You want a good clear vent and the plastic valve has the potential to bind and stop the fuel flow during flight.

And:

Think the one needed is a pre1955 Mopar. A universal may work but check the venting

Nathan et all,
Thanks for the offer. The caps I got at the local Aircraft parts stores seem to be working fine. I made sure I got a vented cap. They are just a little differently shaped than the factory one. I flew 1.6 hrs. last night on floats and didn't seem to have any venting issues.
