Weight & Balance info

Post by mtw »

I am trying to get prepared for my sport pilot check ride and need to find some additonal weight and balance info for the Chief. All I have is a basic weight of the plane and drawing showing datum point.

I was hoping that maybe someone had some charts or other info that would be helpful.

Thanks,

Todd

Weight & Balance for these older aircraft need alittle research, take a look here for a few POH manuals made up by some pilots.

www.aeronca.com

Also for a list of spec on wt, arm and CG limits check the TC

Will Sport Pilot be your first license? Just curious not many of us out there flying Aeronca's.

One very important thing to remember here is that there was no POH for the Chief and Champ series aircraft. None what so ever from Aeronca. The Type Certificate Data Sheet information and weight and balance is all that you legally have to have with you, and the limits shown there on the airplane.

The info placed on the site that Mike gave you is excellent but its not APPROVED by the FAA, so personally I would not take it with me to ANY checkride. Unless you know the examiner VERY WELL I would not even mention the POH that someone spent the time to draw up and place on the internet.

Chris,

Yes, this is my first license. I do have prior experience in ultralights. Which do you like better, the Champ or Chief?

Oh man................don't go there with the Chief vs. Champ question.

I really miss my Champ :(

Can't do this in a Champ

They really get along well together

In the end Chief's cost about $8,000 less than Champs.

Like Chris said, try both and see which one you like.

Personally I am not fond of having the other person behind me, especially if its a young lady friend.

They both fly pretty much the same, and 80% of the parts are the same on both airplane, so that comes natural.

I have a Champ and I love it. I own a 172 and the Champ and I absolutely love the tandem seating. Makes me feel like Walter Mitty. :D The view of being able to see out both sides equally, makes flying it a better experience for me. As the others say...try it on and see which one you like. My only gripe with the older side by side planes....you better be good friends with your passenger. They are very tight for two unless you are small in stature. I had a 150 as my first plane and that is what I didn't like about it. Just hope the other person has good hygene.:)
Oh, I am not a big guy and it was tight for me and an instructor. My 2 cents.

What Nathan and Keith are missing is that if your passenger is a girl, you get to be friendly real quick in a Chief.

In a Champ she just keeps hitting you over the head with a map! :)

If it is a stick chief you can get real friendly.... :)
Keep the pointed end forward--
The dirty side down.....
And the blue skies on top....

I'm taking my PP written on Friday and my check ride shortly after in the 7FC. Is there a POH for a 57 Tri-Traveler?

Not if she is sitting in the front, I know you can't stop short but the reach around works nicely. :D :D
