Southern Style Aeronca Flyin June 11th

Post by Nathan K. Hammond »

Mark the date,

June 11th
Peachstate Aerodrome (GA2)

After some proding from a couple Southern's, we're gonna do it again.
It’s setup to be an easy going flyin with no official schedule. This will be a one day hang-out, meet up with old friends, look at other airplanes kinda thing. Some things to know…..

Location:
Peachstate Aerodrome (GA2)
2400x100 Turf marked with cones and tires, Runway’s 13-31 with a slight dip in the middle. RW31 has a displaced threshold for (use full length at your discretion; you can’t see the other end except from the displaced threshold on.) The runway has a bit of washboard to it in the middle that can get a little rough.

What to Bring:
Tie-Down’s if you're staying the night.
Sunscreen
Camera
A great Attitude

Fuel:
Self Serve Is located on the field; $5.12 but that can change between now and then. Other options are; Griffin (6A2) 5 miles East; Thomaston (OPN) 15miles South; and Tara (4A7) 10miles North.

Food:
There is a restraunt located on site; http://www.barnstormersgrill.com You are on your own, they have a good buffet as well as the full menu. I will have a cooler stashed with water and other drinks in it.

Shelter:
If you want to hang out over night or bring the family/friends there's good ‘Ol fashion camping. But if that’s not your thing… several hotels are located about 6 miles away in Griffin.
Best Western
Howard Johnson Inn
Comfort Inn
Days Inn
Super 8
And several B&B's around the area.

Transportation:
We should have enough vehicles to cover any trips to/from town. But if you like to go solo…
Economy Rent-A-Car 770-227-5966
Enterprise Rent-A-Car 770-223-2830

Things to Do:
If you’re interested in touring the local area; Peachstree City, (you can fly over; KFFC) is 15 miles away and home to Aircraft Spruce and Specialty; Atlanta Motor Speedway is about 10 miles to the North located next to the Tara airport. For a pleasant flight and sight seeing; river-run the Flint River into the Pine Mountains. It’s about an hour round-trip more or less. There is a really nice dock down on the stocked pond located behind the hangar if you feel like getting a line wet.

If you need a BFR; Clay Hammond is usually hanging around. (404)406.0706

Here you see the general layout of the airport. Generally we park in front of the hangar/restaurant and the area on the right; somebody should help you park, if not, go with the flow. The RED arrows show the general taxi routes. RW31 has the displaced threshold for; use full length at your discretion but you can’t see the other end except from the threshold forward.

Well dang you guys  If things change, you know where we'll be.

DJ, you are the Great white hope!

Chris, don't tell David, but we're planning on running up to Jasper in the next week or two. I think Derek will take his Acrosport and I'll probably take the Yak. If we plan this right and you're off; want to tag along?

You know I would rather fly than eat BUT!! My schedule is booked the next couple weeks. This weekend my wife is visiting from Oklahoma, next weekend I have an Army trip to Indiana then I return to take a "Leader Developement Trip" to Gettysburg - which I'm honestly excited about- return from that on the 9th of June to depart to Louisianna to check on another Army unit. I'm free the 18th and 25th of June. THANKS FOR REMEMBERING ME ANYWAY. HAVE FUN.

Bump.
It's still a go.
I received an email asking if the fly-in was still a go. A thread regarding the fly-in was removed on another site prompting some confusion.

Chris, we'll plan on doing something one of those day's you're free. If nothing else, we can go burn up some fossils. :D
Have to say I'm jealous of the Gettysburg trip. I grew up close to Perryville, Kentucky and trail ride by horse back on the
battlefield whenever we visit Kelley's family. It's something else to imagine all the horror that happened at those places.

Just found out EAA 468, the local chapter, will being giving Young Eagle rides in the morning until about noon. If you're an EAA member and want to fly Young Eagles, they alway welcome additional pilots willing to help out.

Bump.

Things are shaping up and sounds like we may have a decent number of airplanes! I'll have a cooler with a bunch of water available for all; and the restaurant will be in full swing from 9 to 9.

Might have to roll the champ fuselage out of the hangar just to feel like one of you guys. :D

Seeya there!

Everyone had a great time. Tater is an excellent host. I really needed to get out of the house and around old airplanes and old airplane people. Not a huge turnout but everyone had smiles on their faces. Eric Hendrix and Lloyd Thompson brought the 2 L-16's from Jasper. Lee Ballard brought his Champ from down South. Had a real friendly group from Warner Robins there(with a Champ I think). Duane Huff and a friend from Lawrenceville in his 11AC Chief. Derek Landstrom in his Acrosport. Jimmy Payne in his 182(I think). Kyle Boatright in his RV-6(he is working on a Champ). Eric got hoodwinked into flying 3 Young Eagles flights. Two of them were first flights. To get your first flight in a Champ, what's better than that! David J.

P.S. New Georgia Boys Patch coming out....

Oops, also Steve Whittenberger from Franklin County.

The turnout was good, considering it was spur of the moment event. Lloyd and the Georgia Mountain Boys made it in first; I think they left about 30 minutes before sunrise. Not surprising after following them to Middletown a couple years ago. All total we had 11 total; 7 Aeronca's (4 Champs, 2 L-16's, and 1 Chief), 1 Citabria, an RV, Derek's AcroSport and a sharp looking C182.
